The CFPB finalized a rule in January 2025 prohibiting consumer reporting agencies from including medical debt information in consumer reports furnished to creditors. This applies to all medical debt regardless of amount. Medical debt collectors may still attempt to collect, but the debt cannot appear on credit reports used for lending decisions.
