Credit Freeze — Your Right Under the FCRA

You have a legal right to freeze your credit at all three bureaus for free. A freeze stops new creditors from accessing your report. You can lift it within an hour electronically when you need to apply for credit.

Section 605C requires consumer reporting agencies to place a security freeze on a consumer's file free of charge within 1 business day of electronic request. A freeze prevents access to the consumer report for new credit decisions. Temporary lifts must be processed within 1 hour of electronic request.
