Cease and Desist Letter — Stop Debt Collectors

You can legally stop a debt collector from contacting you by sending a cease and desist letter. After receiving it, the collector can only contact you to confirm they are stopping or to notify you of a specific legal action.

Section 805(c) states that if a consumer notifies a debt collector in writing that they refuse to pay or wish the collector to cease communication, the collector must stop all communication except to advise that collection efforts are terminated or to notify of intention to file a lawsuit.
