If you dispute an item, the bureau has 30 days to investigate. Items they cannot verify must be deleted. This is the FCRA's core consumer protection for correcting credit report errors.

Section 611 requires that if completeness or accuracy of any item is disputed, the consumer reporting agency must reinvestigate free of charge within 30 days. If information cannot be verified, it must be deleted. Previously deleted items may only be reinserted if the furnisher certifies accuracy.
